Covens
History 4 Houses Covens Wicca

The coven

Each coven contains members from all 4 houses, so you don’t have to go looking for a coven based on one power creature. Covens include circles or groups, of which the 4 houses form the main groupings.

Our services or rituals are usually referred to as celebrations, as that is what they are, and include ritual working, celebration, partying, games and often competitions between the houses. All member of the coven are supportive and friendly to each other but there is a level of fun and rivalry between houses, plus of course opportunities for romance and great friendships to develop.

Levels

Like other forms of Wicca we have 3 levels, the licentiate or student, the priestess or priest and the high priests or high priestess referred to as HP’s. Males and females are equal in rank, and all people within a level are equal.

Within our own order we often refer to licentiates as apprentices, priestesses as sorcerers and  our HP’s as wizards, as most are more inclined towards magic than ceremonial activities. We tend not to use the word witch, as it can be abrasive to some Christians and others, but still respect other paths that do use this term.

Kings, queens, .....

The leader of the coven is the queen or king wizard, and this is one of the HP’s and is elected for a term of a year and a day annually by all the priests and hp’s in a secret ballot annually. The current holder of the office is only able to take the office again if the coven has no other fit and healthy HP’s. Theoretically therefore for one day of each year we have two of them, and this will line up with one of the celebration days.

The queen or king wizard names one house as the senior house for the year, but it is never the house he or she is in, nor the house that was the previous year the senior house. It is the role of the senior house to a assist the king or queen in the scheduling and organisation of coven activities although that can involve or co-opt any member who is happy to help from any house. The idea being that over time more people get the chance to develop leadership skills.

Relationships between covens

Each coven is separate and equal.

A council of covens was held, when we applied for membership of the Traditional Craft Association, an organisation that allows different witchcraft traditions to work more closely together, but this proved difficult to put together, causing a lot of delays. It was therefore decided that we would ask Aqua the high king or queen, of the senior craft order, the Water Witches, who is recognized as a wise person by all the member groups to act as our overall advisor to all covens and to coordinate opinion, overall policy and standardised documentation. This was accepted by the current high king on the understanding that he could call on members of any of our covens to assist him with this task, as we appreciated he has many calls upon his time from many groups and projects as well as being the leader of one group. We then conferred upon him, but not necessarily his successor the ceremonial title of High King of the Power Wiccans. This is a role equivalent to a monarch within a democracy, he can advice us, but we do not have to do as instructed, however we treat him with the greatest respect and honour, and as the head of our order. Like most witchcraft groups Water Witches have individual witch names but the title of Aqua is taken up on appointment by each High King or Queen, and then don't use their previous witch name.

We are happy to discuss any mater of interest with any other Wiccan path or traditional witchcraft path, and like most others are completely tolerate as to others.

Rings

A group of licentiate or student members, who do not have at least one priest or priestess (sorcerer), we call a ring. You can operate as ring, and become a coven as soon as at least one of you have taken the oath.

Virtual Wicca

Virtual Wicca are a part of Power Wicca, but is a virtual coven that Wiccan from around the world can belong to, and share their knowledge and skills. Its fundamental beliefs are that of Power Wicca, but as it is in many ways a collection of solitaries, each witch will have their own individual beliefs.

Virtual Wicca encourages its members to form their own rings or covens, either as a part of Power Wicca or as a path of their own. It provides one of the most convenient and friendly routes for those with a calling to Wicca to get the help they require to get involved.

They have their own web site at www.witchcraft-wicca.com
